Takeovers were revamped to activate from inside the game: one button per category (Finishing, Shooting, Playmaking, Defensive/Rebounding and Physicals) instead of being assigned in MyPLAYER creation. Mamba Mentality replaced Double Takeover after completing the three Brickley and Art of Shooting challenges. Ten Takeover perks were unlocked through scrimmages, drills, challenges and perk counts, and four badge perks (Overdrive, Immunity, Drill Savant, Scholar) plus three performance multipliers sped up badge progression.

NBA 2K21

Takeover was split from 8 archetype takeovers (current-gen) into 24 specific abilities on next-gen, and became a multi-tier system with a primary slot, a secondary slot and a Team Takeover meter. Mamba Mentality, added in honor of Kobe Bryant, let you swap takeovers freely once you had earned all your badge points.

  • Takeovers were broken from 8 archetype-based takeovers (current-gen) into 24 more specific abilities on next-gen. They give temporary boosts to your MyPLAYER that you fire off when your player gets hot.
  • Takeover became a multi-tier system. After you set your rating caps and vitals you get a list of abilities based on your build, then pick one for your primary slot and one for your secondary slot (or the same one twice to double up).
  • In game, the meter fills the primary slot first. You can activate it right away or wait to fill the secondary slot, but a turnover or bad shot can lose your progress. Filling both lets you activate both together for longer.
  • Filling the Team Takeover meter as well lets you activate every teammate's takeovers, and, as in current-gen, gives you control of your teammates in MyCAREER games (per 2K gameplay director Mike Wang).

The 24 next-gen abilities: Advanced Gathers, Finishing Moves, Easy Blowbys, Pull-Up Precision, Anklebreaking Shots, Negative Impact, Limitless Range, Spot-Up Precision, Team Ratings Boost, Team Takeover Boost, Team Badge Boost, Extreme Clamps, Perimeter Badge Drop, Enhanced Jump Shot Contests, Stuff Blocks, Paint Intimidation, Interior Badge Drop, Boxout Wall, See the Future, Glass Clearing Dimes, Power Backdowns, Post Playmaking, Advanced Post Moves, Post Shot Daggers.

A special Takeover in honor of the late Kobe Bryant: once you have earned all your badge points you receive the Mamba Mentality badge, which lets you change your takeovers whenever you want.

NBA 2K20

Takeover kept eight general archetype-based takeovers, with examples like the Spot-Up Shooter, Slasher and Shot Creator takeovers. There was no published list of per-takeover attribute requirements.

NBA 2K19

Takeover debuted in NBA 2K19 as a more nuanced take on the 'on fire' system from NBA Jam. Each archetype had its own way to build a Takeover meter, such as playmakers setting up teammates or rim protectors locking down the paint. Once activated, an on-fire badge appeared under your player and unlocked a tier of animations and badges that fit the archetype (a playmaker might get Dimer and Ankle Breaker boosts). If you built double the meter you could fire a full Team Takeover, but a bad play like a turnover cost you the whole meter.
